From Rt. 15 in Johnson, turn north on Pearl Street. The mill will be on the right when crossing over the Gihon River. The mill can easily be seen from Sr 15.

The first mill and dam on this site was built c 1790 by Jonathan McConnell.

In 1917, C. H. Stearns and his son, Arthur Stearns, bought the property.

In August 1917, the mill was destroyed by a fire, and more modern mill was built on the old site.

In 1919, D. B. Smalley purchased an interest after the death Arthur. Later, Rollin O. Balch entered the firm; then, later, D. Burleigh entered the firm.

In 1942, another fire damaged the mill and it was rebuilt in 1943. Two years later, in 1945, Charles P. Conger joined the company.

In the 1940’s, the mill handled feed, grain, and flour. Today, 1212, it is the Vermont Studio Center.
