John Ditto Mills / Sharrer's Flour Mill
About 0.5 miles NW of New Chester (SH 394), on Oxford Road/Sr 01004 just north of the Conewago Creek on the right side in Tyrone Township.
The mill, which is 3.5 stories and measures about 45'X 60' was built in 1866. It was for many years known as Sherrer's Mill. *Update: This Mill is still a flour mill. Inside are 5, 50 barrel Marvel Midget mills. All the original elevator legs are in operation and bran and midlings are still bagged the old way. The mill is operated the old way; and might I add, is one of the cleanest old operational mills in the East. Ken Miranda 12/03/2007*
The mill is no longer producing flour, but is mixing livestock feeds for local farmers as part of a modern milling complex. The lower story and foundations are of stone, while the upper 2.5 stories are frame.
Sharrer’s Mill Dam, 6.5' high and 260' long, was constructed for use by the flour mill, was no longer needed for the operation of the mill, which is still used to mix livestock feed. Prior to its removal, the Conewago Creek caused some damage to the south side of the dam resulting in the creation of a new creek. This posed some safety and ecological concerns that prompted the the removal of the dam. The actual dam across the stream was removed; but, the abutments on each side of the stream bank were left for bank stabilization and posterity reasons in 2005.
