John Burton Flour Mill
Located about 1500’ east of the Galena River on the right side of W Stagecoach Trail/Cr 1 and about 2 miles east of Galena.
John Burton was born in Derbyshire Co, England in 1822, coming to this country via Philadelphia, in March 1828.
He engaged in smelting until 1831, when he moved to Galena, settled on his present site in 1834, and continued to engage in mining and smelting in East Galena Twp. after that time.
In 1836, he hauled lead to Chicago with ox teams, it taking him three weeks to make the round trip from his mines near his grist mill on W. Stagecoach Trail/Cr 3 about 2 miles west of Galena.
He owned this flour mill (built 1830’s-1850’s) near his smelting furnace and lived with his father for several years in the first frame house ever built in the county.
He married Miss H. E. Watts of Pennsylvania in 1858 and had one child, Annie E. born in July 1869. Today the mill is just a 3.5 story stone shell/2.5 stories facing the highway.GPS: 42° 25.31'N, 90° 23.71'W ele 633'/193 meters
