One source of information states the ï¬rst grist mill in Butler Twp. was built in 1813 by Samuel Woodling. A second source of information states George Hughes, for who the village was named, built a grist mill in 1853 in Hughesville.
The name of the village was later changed to St. Johns. The 1873 atlas of Butler Co. only shows one grist mill in the township.

The A.Pomeroy map of Butler Township of 1873 shows the mill to be across the bridge to the left/south side of the creek, but the mill is actually on the north side of the creek and north end of the bridge.
