Hoover's Mill
From I-70, take Ex. 29, SR 48, go north on Rte 48 for 4.8 miles to the mill on right (east side of road). The mill sits back off the road.
The Hoover Mill is located at the southern border of Union Township, adjacent to the Miami-Montgomery County Line Road on Rt. 48 between the towns of West Milton and Union.
The farm, the mill is on, was settled by Quakers, John and Sarah (Byrket) Hoover, who left North Carolina in their opposition to salvery. They became members of the local Quaker settlement and were the great-great grandparents of President Herbert Hoover .
The first mill was built by Noah Hoover, a great uncle to former 31st president Herbert Hoover, in 1840. The brick miller's house was also built at this time by Noah.
Jason Hoover, Noah's son, built a new mill in 1878.
The current small mill was built in 1941 on the same location as the earlier two mills.
Restorations have been conducted in 1976 and 1996 to the small mill.
The mill wheel had not operated since 1984; the babbitt bearings had completely deteriated, the lower half of the wheel needed to be replaced and one corner of the mill was sinking into the ground.
The wheel was repaired through donations of funds and labor from VFW Post 8211, American Legion Post 487, Jack Farmer and the Theis family, upon whose property the mill is located today.
