From US 146 in Hackettstown, N.J., take NJ 182 south for 1 mile, turn left on NJ 57 and continue another 7 miles to Penwell Road. This road will loop back onto NJ 57 unless you turn left on Penwell Rd. and cross the Musconetcong River. The mill is on the left after crossing the river.
The mostly frame mill with stone lower story stands 3.5 stories tall and occupies a footprint of 40'X 50'. The present mill was built in 1855 by John Anderson, run by Hugh Anderson and sold in 1867 to John W. Homer and known as Homer's Mills. In 1893 Peter lance sold the complex to John R. Stires. Ill health resulted in his death in 1910. Goerge Fisher was the next owner of 'Stires Mills' until 1939, when Fisher's widow sold the mill, still producing flour, to Roy Thomas. Some of the Thomas family are still involved in the operation of the mill today. Various additions throughout the years, in 1941 and again in 1972, have helped to keep the mill competative.
The visit happened to catch a semi-trailer unloading shelled corn, which was being augered into the mill. It was still in operation in the fall of 1992. This mill is located in an area that has about 30 mills still standing in a 10 mile radius. A fun place to visit, full of history and scenic vistas. See the web address above fore more detailed history and information about the earlier wooden mill built in 1784 by J. Fritts a little further downstream on the Musconetcong from the present mill.
