Holstein Mill
Approximately halfway between Guelph and Owen Sound on Hwy 6, north of Kitchener, Ont. Drive 6 miles north of Mount Forest on Hwy 6, turn right on County 109, then go one mile east to Holstein.
The former water-powered mill was built in 1876 by W.T. Petre. A water turbine from the Beatty Saugeen River transfered the waters power through the turbine, creating about 85 horsepower to operate the milling machinery. The turbine is still intact, but has not operated for 46 years. The Holstein dam is just east of the mill, impounding about 15 acres of water.
The mill was burned to the ground in 1918, then the former 35'X 100' wooden structure was replaced with one of cement block on a stone foundation. This interior photo shows the business area of the mill, the scales, writing desk of sorts, and various wooden shutes and enclosed, bucket/belted augers or elevators.
The tower portion of the rebuilt mill was added in 1960, as modern milling operations demanded change. The brick miller's house is visible just beyond the mill on the left of photo. The current owner/operators are John & Barb Stevenson, as it is an oparating feed mill. They provided the photos and information- Nov.14, 2004.
