Verse for Thought
"Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. He changes times and seasons; he sets up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. He reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what lies in darkness, and the light dwells with him. I thank and praise you, O God of my fathers: You have given me wisdom and power."
({Daniel 2:20-23 NIV})

Alva Hodgson built the third mill on the site in 1882. The first mill was built in 1837. The second was built in 1861, but sucumbed to the rigors of the Civil War. The paddle wheel was functional for a while but was later replaced for power by a turbine.

Hodgson teamed up with his brother George for a while and the mill prospered greatly. French buhrstones were imported to use for grinding the wheat and other grains. Most or the equipment is gone from the mill and it was operated in 1995 as a gift shop by Hervert Smith. Restoration is ongoing and a Living History village was being developed across Bryant Creek.

The mill did well long into the 20th century, and finally a new mill was built in nearby Gainesville to keep up with production orders. That too has since been sold along with the original Hodgson Mill name and logo to Siemer Milling Co. (IL-025-004). Hodgson Mill products are now produced by them in Gainesville and the Illinios Plant.

*Update: The modern flour mill, and the commercial products sold under the name of Hodgson Mill have nothing to do with the old mill that really does not operate. The people who started or built the modern flour mill whose products are sold across the country just used the old mill's name and image on their flour products. There is no business or ownership connection. The old mill has been sold a number of times since the modern electrical powered mills have come into existance. Ted R.
