Hering Grist & Saw Mill / Springfield Mill / Patterson Mill
The mill is located at 6930 Sykesville Rd, a short distance north of Sykesville on Md 32. It sits on the northwest corner of Md 32 as it crosses Piney Run between Sykesville and Eldersburg.
One report states that J. Ehler built a new mill at this location in 1825. Another report says there is an inscription on an interior post in the mill with the date "1813".
An 1862 county map shows George Patterson as the owner. George left the mill to his daughter, Florence Patterson Carroll, whose executors sold it in 1880 to the future Governor, Frank Brown, for $50,000.
Lewis H. Selby was a long time operator who leased the mill from Brown. Klee & Hering purchased the mill from Brown in the late 1800's.
H. L. Hering was in charge of remodeling the mill to the roller system, with first-class modern equipment put in for a mill of 50 barrel's capacity. Brown conveyed the actual title of the mill to David R. Hering and John P. Klee in 1897.
That same year Klee sold his interest to Hering. Mrs. Carrie DeVaries Hering inherited the mill and later conveyed it to her son, DeVaries R. Hering by 1938.
DeVaries discontinued flour making in the 1920's and concentrated on feeds. He installed a diesel engine in 1935 and switched to electricity in 1945. By 1971, the mill was closed. DeVries R. Hering sold it to John R. and Connie L. Buck in 1983.
