Hall Bros. Mill
Go north of Columbia on US 95 about 5 miles, turn right on Cr 112. Go straight at BLM sign (landing) and go down the hill to the mill at the bottom/end of the lane.
Where the Hall Mill sits has been the site of a gristmill for over 150 years. The mill is surrounded by grain-storage bins.
A gristmill was operated here on the Espy Plantation.
Jim Skipper operated a mill here that was destroyed by the flood of 1916.
The headrace beside the mill comes from quite a distance upstream. Oswald "Oz" Spivey operated the mill for many years after running a mill between Tumbleton and Headland.
The headrace, looking downstream, right behind the mill where it dumps into the turbine pit. Roy Herschel Hall took over the mill in the late 1940's later bringing his brother Hannon Fowler Hall, Jr. into the business.
Don's Creek empties into the Foster Creek (once called Cedar Creek) and flows on to the Chattahoochee River. The mill is built near a natural waterfall; cut down into the banks of the Don Creek.
This lasted until a heart transplant caused Mr. Hall to retire and the former Hall Brothers Mill is now owned and operated by Hannon F. Hall, Jr. and his son, Jason Edward Hall.
This monocot and member of the lily family, found behind the mill, can sometimes be found in genetic mutation. Sometimes plants with 4 or five leaves are found. This particular plant is either a rare, endangered species of trillium found in parts of Alabama, Georgia and N. Carolina called Relict trillium (Trillium reliquum) or Trillium underwoodii/Little Sweet Betsy.
The mill didnt appear to be operating at the time of visit in March 2008. No one was around. The address is: Rt. 1, Box 92, Columbia, Alabama 36319 Ph: 205-696-4554
