Griesemer's Mill
Halfway between Yellowhouse on Pa 562 & Pa 662 and Manatawny on Pa 73, from Covered Bridge Road turn east on Church Rd. for 0.6 miles, then left on Spangsville Rd. to the mill by the covered bridge.
An 1847 grist mill, 40'X 60' by 3.5 stories. Built by D. L. & E. Griesemer. The mill was in good condition in 1981 and is quite popular, as is the Griesemer's Mill/Spangsville Covered Bridge situated right beside the old mill at Manatawny Creek. The bridge predates the present mill by 15 years.
The mill sits opposite the Henry Wagner Farm Property in a rural, pastoral setting.
The Griesemer's Mill/Spangsville Covered Bridge was built in 1832 spanning 124' of the Manatawny Creek in Oley Township, Berks County next to the mill. It is contructed to the Burr Arch design and is kept in good repair, being a popular tourist attraction.
This photo taken on July 2006 show another side of the mill. The mill sems to have been neglected in the last ten years or more.
The mill as viewed from the rear near the entrance to the covered bridge. *Update: The covered bridge is still there and open to traffic, but you are correct in your comment that the mill appears to be deteriorating. It also appears that one of the two farms/barns across the road from the mill is also going down hill. Rick Heffner 08/14/2006*
