Green Creek Roller Mills / Orangeville Mill / Bowman Mill
From Orangeville on Pa 487, go west on Mt. Pleasant Road/Logging Road 19031 to Fishing Creek. Cross the bridge and turn right on Green Creek Road/Logging Road 19030/Sr 4020 and go 0.1-0.2 miles to the mill on the right near Bowmans Mill Road junc. on the left.
Henry Geiger built a mill on Green Creek west of Orangeville. The exact date is not known. GPS: 76' 25.48W, 41' 04.54N. *UPDATE: The mill building presntly being removed by the resident of the property is not the original mill. When water for power was eliminated, just go toward Rohrsburg Road on Green Creek Road along the old canal and see where the dam once was. Do not enter the property without permission of the resident. However, part of the original foundation for the water wheel(s) is behind the residence. Plus the front section with the drive through of the mill was an addition and between the addition and the road is base for previous scales. In addition, although many people dropped off appliances without knowledge of the owners, many were not being accepted. With the grace of Charles Karns III, dumpsters were delivered and physically loaded by residents without rental fee. No return existed. Unfortunately, many individuals continued the dropping off. Plus higher quality steel, other metals, and items were stolen as well as harmful actions to the building. Chester Kirchman DMin 01/21/2019*
Geiger sold the mill, built c.1810-15, to Jacob Seidel in 1822 and in 1845 Wesley Bowman purchased it and erected the present building.
The mill was powered by 3 turbine wheels of 50 hp. each. He installed roller mills in 1888. Bowman was succeeded by his son, Henry, who was followed by Benjamin C. Bowman, the last Bowman to operate the mill.
In 1923, the title passed to Shuman and Linville, who operated it for a short time and sold it to J. W. Conner & Sons.
The next owner was W. O. Chapman, who sold it, in 1948, to Austin Brandt, who also owned the Brandt Mill in Mifflinville. The mill was operated by his son, Gerald Brandt, producing Fishing Creek Buckwheat Flour among others.
Brandt's Mill production increased at the Mifflinville building, so the Bowman Mill was sold. It is now being used as a junkyard/outlet for second-hand appliances.
