Glade Valley Mill / Etzler Mill
This mill is located on the southside of Old Md 550 in the town of Woodsboro at the railroad tracks across from N. C. Cramer & Son Inc.
The Glade Valley Milling Co. building is not the only flour mill structure in the town of Woodsboro and was in the 20th century one of the town's most important industries.
The mill business began in Troutville about 1850 but was purchased and moved in the 1890's to Woodsboro to utilize the Western Maryland railroad line to facilitate shipping. The mansard roof with dormers was a common feature of large 19th century mills. The mansard roof functionally provided the mill with an extra story untaxed.
Begun in Troutville by Daniel P. Snyder, the mill company was brought to Woodsboro by Anderson Etzler. The Glade Valley Milling Co. took over the mill about 1904 and enlarged the original 2.5 story building to its present size.
The small brick building to the south housed the original steam engine which was converted to electric power in the early 20th century. The original mill engineer's house is the building at 102 Creagerstown Rd. immediately west of the mill (seen in the first photo).
The small building on the north side of the mill was the office. The mill remained in service until the late 1950's. GPS: -77' 19.14W, 39' 32.22N
