Gilberts Grist Mill / Bowman's Mill
The mill and adjacent stone house are located on the west side of Leitersburg-Smithsburg Rd. about one mile south of Leitersburg & 1/4th mile NW of Unger Road on Little Antietum Creek in Washington Co., Md.
The mill sign by the entrance to the existing mill/residence today. The mill is still owned by the Bowman family since 1886, currently owned by Kelly Shank.
The mill as it appears today in 2008. athe original mill was built c. 1750 by Jacob Gilbert. A newspaper article on 1793 referred to the mill as Jacob Gilbert's Mill. The mill was rebuilt by Frederick Bell in 1837-38.
This is the 1837-38 rebuilt mill of Frederick Bell's accomplishment. Notice the mill had an additional 1.5 story frame structure attop the 2 story limestone lower portion. One fourth of the frame portion extended out in front of the mill supported by four posts, to create a drive under or abck under, out of the weather place to load and unload grains and feeds.
The catshead was no doubt located in the enclosed peak and pulled sacks of wheat, oats, barley, corn, etc.up into the various floors of the mill through several trapdoors.
This old house is the original miller's house, built about the same time as the original mill in c. 1750.
Another view of the miller's house in conjunction with other farm buildings at the mill location.
Almost a bird's eye view of the mill/farm complex with Little Antietum Creek in the right foreground.
The mill was in very poor condition around 1980 when the present Bowman family members took off the top frame portion of the mill and refurbished the rest of the mill into a home. From its location, the brick house across the Leitersburg-Smithburg Road may well be the second miller's house. Perhaps the current owner can substanciate or correct any info I have about the mill.
