Ferrell Hay Fork Factory
Go north from Andover on US 206 to Newton. Take the slightly angled Madison Street to the right and follow to its intersection with Halsted St. The Hay Fork Factory is on Madison, just beyond Halsted, the second structure on the right.
John Ferrell manufactured his Patented hay fork design from his home in Green Twp., Sussex, Co. beginning in 1883. Simon S. Cook was contracted to built Ferrell's Hay Fork Manufactory, 130' X 50' x 2 stories. It was finished in January 1894.
A 25 hp engine and accompaning boiler powered a trip hammer and blowing forge to produce the steel frames for the fork, employing 15 men. He purchased the adjoining house, added a sawing mechanism and employed 15 young boys to manufacture 3,000 peach baskets a day. See the website for more details and history of Newton, NJ.
