Erhart's Grist Mill
One mile north of Leithsville, make left turn onto Old Mill Rd. Take for 2/3 mile to the mill.
North vista of mill taken in November 1987 shows main part of mill complex. Main fieldstone building is approx. 40'x60' and 4 stories high. Mill is on Old Mill Rd.(township rd.) beween communities of Leithsville and Bingen. In 1820, the Erhart family built the brick miller's house. They fed 14 mill workers daily. The mill operated on 4-run of stones, with one set of stones being replaced with a turbine, until 1959. Three thousand fee of headrace parallels Saucon Cr. and tunnels under the railroad tracks upstream of the mill.
This photo shows the back of the mill complex. The stream is Saucon Cr. and the arch is part of the tailrace exit for the water used to power the mill that is then discharged back into the stream. The headrace pulls water out of Saucon Cr. 3,000 yards upstream of the inlet or forebay of the mill, then channels the water in an open ditch or enclosed pipe(penstock) to the mill.
A 25'x40' frame addition on a stone foundation pobably built for additional storage of feeds and grain. The original small stone mill and log miller's cottage burned in 1865 and mill was rebuilt with a gambrel roof. The mill burned again about 2000/2001 and if memory serves correctly, the cause was arson. It is not known what the current statis is of the mill. These photos taken in Nov. 1987 by Jim Miller.
Just south of the mill is this unique iron bridge, built in 1867, over the Saucon Creek. The bridge was rebuilt in 1948, but is closed to vehicle traffic.
