David Lauk's Mill
Just off US 422 onto Water St. at #51 Water St. on the left side.
The 3.5 story 40'X 50' limestone structure was pretty well gutted by the 1950's, no doors or windows intact. *Update: Sir, I owned the mill in 1968-1983. It was an apartment house when we got it, so we took everything out including the water wheel that was in the floor at the side door of the building. It had 5 bedrooms, living room , kitchen and dining room and one bathroom. We found out that the mill was a grist mill in the 17 & 18 hundreds and a funtional part of the colonial times. It is in the county historial books at the Berks County Courthouse in Reading. The overall appearance of the outside has not changed sine we had the building and the metal roof is the same one we put on at the cost of about $11,000.00 back in the 1960's.
Update cont'd: The side of the building that is shown in the second picture was facing the lower road and there was a building on that side that was used as a mill office. The foundation is still under the ground there, about where the heat exchanger is in the picture, below the back window. The wagons would come off the road there and stop at the building to be weighed, then pull up to the front of what is the porch to be loaded or unloaded depending if they were bringing grain to to be milled or takeing the milled grain out, to a destination. In the fall of 1992, the mill was again being used as a residence and was in excellent condition. Sherry Shore 05/09/2010* Need more help and info on this.
