Cupola Mill / Lewis Davis Grist & Saw Mill
At the intersection of Chestnut Tree Rd. and Cupola Rd in crossroads of Cupola 4 miles east of Honeybrook at the eastern edge of Honeybrook Twp. The land across the road is in West Nantmeal Twp.
An eastern red cedar tree in front of the mill greatly obsured the view of the front and the catshead/bag hoist in October 1987.
The stone mill with three sides stuccoed was built about 1760 of fieldstone in a rubblestone fashion. Measuring about 35'X 50' for 2.5 stories with an addition of stone about 12'X 50' of 1.5 stories.
The north side of the mill, the only side showing the native fieldstone construction, with a newer garage constructed since the mill was renovated into a dwelling, but tastefully in the same decor.
The view of the north unstuccoed portion of the mill from the area of the garage.
The catshead/sack hoist situated on the gabled-roof peak.
A view of the mill from the newly rebuilt stone-arch bridge that spans the Branch of Brandywine Creek on Chestnut Tree Road.
The dammed creek forming a mill pond located behind the mill on the Branch of Brandywine Creek that powered the mill.
The mill was in great condition on the exterior and no doubt the interior as well. The view of the front has been greatly enhanced by the cutting down of the cedar trees that had formerly obscured the view. The mill has not been for sale since 2004, when it was purchased by the present owners. They plan plan to keep it as their dwelling for many years.
