Crosseyed Cricket Mill
From Knoxville, go west on I-40 and get off at exit 364 and go south on US 321/Tn 95/Tn 73 Scenic about 1.5 miles, turn right on Manis Road and go about 3/4th of a mile. Then turn right on Pawpaw Plains Road, go a 1/4th mile and turn left on Country Lane. Go about 1/5th mile to the mill on the right in a camp grounds. Actually is located in Pawpaw Plains, Tn.
The mills original overshot waterwheel was changed to a breast wheel when the mill was restored in 1979.
Another angled look at the front of the mill, of late used as a restaurant and church camp with campground; but in 2010, the mill was being used for storage.
The upper side of the grist mill, not at all very visible in this photo.
The waterwheel in the photo, in need of much repair, appears to be an overshot wheel, although claims have placed it as a pitchback/breast wheel.
The restaurant, the words "Solid Rock Baptist Mission" on the sign above the porch.
I imagine the trough in front of the wheel was desined to catch some of the overflow and splash coming off the rotating waterwheel.
Another look at the waterwheel. The metal gearing wheel afixed to the actual wheel meshes with a bull gear as seen in the above photo. The working of the mill are turned by the bull gear and not by any connection to the wheels axle.
The mill restaurant is closed, but the menu still hangs by the front door. GPS: 35? 51.40'N, 84? 20.25'W 873' elevation Address: 751 Country Lane, Lenoir City, Tn 37771-3649 (865) 986-5435
