Clear Spring Mill / Dick Mill
Located about 5 miles SSW of Dillsburg, York Co., Pa on US 15. Turn left off US 15 onto Clear Spring Road, traverse another o.25 miles to the mill ion the right at the junction with Capitol Hill Road.
A 3.5 story frame mill with the lower story of fieldstone. The mill was built in 1886 by Edward & Elizabeth Dick to the present 40'X50' dimensions. A saw mill is decaying behind the grist mill which has been somewhat restored since the 1992 photo. Not sure of the status of the sawmill.
Some mills and houses were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries using a Mansard or French Second Empire roof style. This was because the story under the roof was not counted as a story, so it was not taxed. A good enough reason to build such a building, no? Really need some more history and info on this mill.
The mill has been restored or at least renovated for use as a structural renovations workshop. Not known if the mill is functional.
The original mill was built in 1809, while the current mill is a rebuild of the original in 1886 as attested to by the datestone implanted in the side wall. Rebuilt in 1886 by Edward and Elizabeth Dick.
The old saw mill that was stone foundation with some deteriorating boards above has now also been restored to an excellent condition, again not known if functional. At least the outer structure has been preserved. *ADC Street Atlas of York Co., map #10, A5*
