Burnt Mill / Hainey Mill / Hess Mill
Travel 2 miles north of Marticville, which is 10 miles south of Lancaster City on Pa 324/Marticville Rd. Cross the Pequea Creek, and turn left on Silver Mine Rd./T-569. The mill is on the left along Goods Run at the Pequea Creek, a brick 1.5 story apartment building.
The earliest mill mentioned is Good's Mill on the site in 1737. From 1787 to 1792, Casper Shirk qwned and operated the mill, then Johannes Eshback, Michael Wengert in 1798, David Harnish in 1810, and Isaac Hainey in 1813.
Hainey built the new brick mill in 1814, a 40'/50'X 60' 3 story structure with a sawmill. In 1824 the mill was owned by Jacob Heiney, could be relation/different spelling of Hainey, then sold to John Keeports in 1828, Joseph Good in 1842, Henry Eshleman in 1849. In 1871, the mill burned under the ownership of Jacob & John Good; a 3.5 story mill was downsized to 1.5 story.
Thomas Baumgardner & John Baumgardner owned the shorter mill and property in 1875 and 1899, although the assessment records didn't show it as a mill. By 1900, the mill was operated by Abraham Hess and known as Burnt Mill.
The mill today, 2005, has been remodeled into apartments and is in resonably good condition. It doesn't look much like a mill anymore.
