Brass Castle Mill
Located about one mile north of W. Washington Ave/NJ 57 0n Cr 623/Harmony-Brass Castle Road in the community of Washington, NJ. Look to the right after passing Little Philadelphia Road on the left and just after crossing Brass Castle Creek.
Adam Wandling erected the grist and saw mill at Brass Castle in the late 1830's-early 1840's.
The milling enterprise dealt primarily in grain and lumber in the small community of Brass Castle, just north of Washington, NJ. It is hard to see, situated as it is, back into the hillside. Forces Hill Road might give better access and perhaps closer photos.
The grist mill was contructed of 4.5 stories of local stone, the waterwheel also powering the the adjacent saw mill. It was allowed to deteriorate for decades before being converted into a dwelling, with only the original first story left to utilize. The structure was abandoned when visited; but portions of the millrace and pond remain. GPS: 40? 45.91'N, 75? 0.75'W 525' / 160 meters elevation
