Blue Rock Mill / Witmer's Mill
Located one mile south of Washington Boro. on River Road, about 1000' south of Blue Rock Road on the south side of Witmer Run and west side of River Road.
The earlier mill was a 1.5 story frame chopping mill pre 1814. This limestone mill was built 40'X 50' and 2.5 stories in height by Jacob Witmer in 1832 at the confluence of Witmer Run and the Susquehanna River. Jacob Witmer owned the mill through 1875.
Sometime between 1875 & 1882, the mill was purchased by Hiram Young. H.S. Young had the mill in 1899; and in 1902, Samuel Young was the owner and operater. The flour & grist mill operated by one overshot wheel, provided water from Witmer Run via a 1300'headrace, dropping 4' in elevation to the wheel, then using a 25' tailrace to return to Witmer Run. Average production of flour was 8 barrels/day.
The mill was bought by B. K. Snyder (Sauder) in 1915 and he closed it in 1931. In 1992, the mill was employed as a turkey barn, in better condition than in a 1969 survey. The mill appeared vacant but in good condition in the winter of 2004.
The Conrail RR tracks on the enbankment separate the mill from the Susquehanna. The mill has undergone a tranformation since even 2004, and in January of 2006 has a new look. The building is being used for some type of meeting and is ADA equipped. The mill and adjacent 1856 Witmer German Bank Barn are being or have been restored by the Washington Boro Society for Susquehanna River Heritage.
