This mill was built c. 1837 by Daniel Schawver. Some reports say it was built as early as 1830 by Schawver. GPS: 83' 47.52W, 40' 20.37N
He had previously built a saw mill in 1835. After building the grist mill, he also built a blacksmith shop and managed to operate all three businesses.
Schawver later sold the mill property to J. R. Milliner, who remodeled it and installed the latest equipment of that day.
A vintage photo of the mill, origin unknown, showing the same angle as the previous photograph.
The mill was later purchased by Frederick Kaylor; and by 1875, it was in the possession of his son J. F. Kaylor.
In the early 1900's, the flow of the creek was changed and the mill was soon doomed.
One report states that the old wooden wheel was still attached to the rear of the mill as late as 1945, as seen on this chalk or crayon rendition of the mill & miller's house.
In 2009 the mill is owned by Thelma Matthews, who lives in the old Schawver house across the street from the mill. The mill is used for storage and contains very little mill equipment. Thelma's plan is to have it raised soon as it would cost to much money just to keep it maintained in its present state, let alone the cost of restoration. Perhaps some historical society could take on a restoration project or some private party might purchase the mill for renovation into a dwelling. It would be a shame to loose another historic, industrial facility.
I guess the money to repair the mill proved to hard to come by; cause the mill was actually torn down in 2011.GPS: 40D 20.65'N, 83D 47.91'W ele 1,125'/343 meters Bellefontaine Quad.
