Blow-Me-Down Mill
Southwest of Plainfield, New Hampshire on Route 12A along Blow-Me-Down Brook Gorge.
A source book, "Early American Mills" by Martha & Murray Zimiles states mill was from c.1820. Photographs taken by my brother since restoration show the date A.D. 1891 lettered just above the lower door on a placque. The mill was first placed in Plainfield, Vt. but e-mail from a mill viewer set the mill in New Hampshire, which has since been verified by a second source. Thanks to *UPDATE: Melissa Willis, 1/26/04*
Whichever date is correct for the mill's origin; it fulfilled it function as a mill, was converted into a house, allowed to deteriorate before 1973, then restored to outward appearances by 1990. I doubt if the mill is functional since all eqiupment had been taken out before the first conversion. *Update: The mill is located in Cornish, N.H. just south of Plainfield on the property of St. Gaudens National Historic Site and is administered by the National Park Service.
