Bentzel's Mill
Take Pa 238 (Church Rd.) west from Emigsville for 3 miles. Turn right onto Greenbriar Rd. for 2 miles, then left onto Bentzel's Mill Rd. (more like a lane/dead end). Mill is on right
Built by David & Elizabeth Bentzel in 1831 on Little Conewago Cr. The light reddish sandstone 3.5 story mill measures approximately 40'x 50' with a one story garage addition.
*Update: Bentzel's Mill- AKA - Ilgenfritz Mill. It is believed the first mill on this site was built pre 1781 by George Ilgenfritz. The mill was last operated c. 1930. In 1949 the building was licensed as a hotel. In 1952 a restaurant and later a tavern was added. The tavern is not in the mill today. There has been reconstruction done to a building next to the mill. I think the tavern is in there if it is still operating today.. The date stone on the mill says it was built in 1831 by David & Elizabeth Bentzel. Robert T. Kinsey 02/21/06*
Has been a tavern for many years. That is one way to "preserve" it.
A view of the front of the mill, showing the vertically stacked doors used with the catshead/pulley system to enable feed and grain to be lifted or lowered to various floors of the mill.
