Benfer Mill / Hassinger's Mill / Snook's Mill
The mill is located on Back Mountain Road, 0.3 miles west of Sh 235 in the village of Benfer, north of Beaver Springs.
The first mill at this site was built c. 1825.
The mill was rebuilt in 1849.
The steel, Fitz overshot wheel. The water came from a millrace across the road, then channeled under the road into the small addition to the left from of the mill, comming out the slit in the concrete. There must have been an extension/sluice fron the building out over the wheel for the wheel to turn as an overshot wheel, unless the wheel has been turned around.
A view of the rear of the mill.
A picture of the mill race nestled between the rows of trees on the north side of Back Mtn. Road. The headrace travels about 800'-1000' to the mill.
The headrace forms into a junction box, changes direction to follow a concrete channel/pipe under the road to the mill on the other side.
Benifer Flour & Feed Mill until 1956, when flour production ceased. The mill operated with water power as a flour mill, then switched to electricity.
It closed as a feed mill in 1964-now used as B-C Auto Parts warehouse. GPS: 77' 12.49W, 40' 46.41N
