Bechtel's Oil Mill / Reitnauer's Grist Mill / Weller's Grist Mill
North of Bechtelsville at the junction of Anthony's Mill Road & Heydts School Road by Swamp Creek.
This stone/stucco mill of 3.5 stories, the top 1.5 stories being of wood frame construction, was built presumeably by a Bechtel in 1820 and operated for a time as a linseed oil mill known as Bechtel's Oil Mill.
The mill, measuring approximately 35'X 70', was converted to a grist mill and in 1893, was known as Reitnauer's Grist Mill, a name it kept more or less throughout its duration.
Ernest Weller owned the mill in the late 1970's. He commented that his family had lived in the Washington Twp. area in the 1800's, moved away, then returned in 1909. Ernest's father bought the mill in 1910 and ran the mill as Reitnauer's Mill until 1927. Some area residents did refer to the mill as Weller's Mill during this time period.
The present owners of the mill property are Tom & Kathryn DiGuiseppe. They appear to be keeping the mill in good condition as did Ernest Weller before them. The large stone/stucco miller's house is on the right side of the photo.
