Most of the current building at Batsto Village were built during the Richards Era. Batsto Village is a former bog iron and glassmaking industrial center. Many workers, living in workers houses, worked the bog iron industry, thus the purpose for the agricultural aspects of the village, to provide for the the needs of the workers.

Most of the village was built as a self-contained industrial community, with grist mill; farm buildings including horse barn, mule barn, piggery, threshing barn & range barn (for cattle); post office/store;iron master's mansion; and glassworks (site). The sawmill, with circular saw and shingle mill were added in 1882 during the Joseph Wharton Era 1876-1909. Wharton also introduced the raising of cranberries to the community, as iron production as an industry died out about 1855.
