The 3.5 story stone grist milland dam were built in 1863 by J.M. Hoffman on the site of the former 1784 Hall's Grist Mill, of which the village of Asbury uswed to be called, Hall's Mills.

The mill was converted toa graphite mill in 1895 by Harry Riddle. The company moved to larger manufacturing facilities where they grind, crush, refine, and screen natural and synthetic graphites.

The current facility, Asbury Graphite Mills Inc. at 405 Old Main St./Cr 643, is the world's largest independent merchant and processor of refined graphite and carbons.

The Asbury Graphite Mills continued to use the facility into the 1980's, then concentrated the business across the river in a 1930's era structure as partialy seen in the photo.

The mill has been owned by the Musconetcong Watershed Association since 1999. In July 2003, some restorative work was done in conjunction with the Heritage Conservation Network, which specializes in hands-on-workshops (see featured website) This workshop was led by Walter Hollein of Long Valley, a restoration contractor specializing in the restoration of historic structures. Mr. Hollein is also a Preservation Architect and Millwright.
