Allen's Grist Mill
From Sr 519 in Harmony Township, take Sr 647 (Harmony Brass Castle Road) north approximately one mile. After crossing the Lopatcong Creek, the old mill building (now a PRIVATE RESIDENCE) is on the right side of the road.
This mill, built in the late 1700's, was called Allen's Mill and was owned by Elijah Allen. The mill is located at the junction of Sr 467 and Allen's Mill Road, which goes to Montana, or by turning left at the next junction, to Roxbourgh.
The mill was powered by water from a millpond fed by Lopatcong Creek which powered other mills, but none busier than the Allen Mill.
Elijah, born in 1814, and his wife raised a family of four sons and three daughters. Moses, Sarah, James, John, Henriette, Anne, & Elijah Jr. Sons Elijah and John died at age 28 and 20 respectively. Elija Jr., James, John, and Sarah are buried in Harmony Presbyterian Church Cemetery, as are the parents Elijah Sr. and Levina. Lopatcong Creek in the photo.
The photo was taken in the 1940's to 1950's of the mill after it had been converted into a residential dwelling. The stone house on the left, behind the mill and across the road, was the miller's house belonging to the Allens. Later, in the latter part of the 1800's, the home and an adjacent building were the home and business, a woolen factory, belonging to Daniel Stout.
Allen was also involved in politics. He ran and was elected as a Freeholder from 1845-1848 and from 1851-1862. Elijah became a member of the Warren County Farmer, Mechanics, and Manufacturer's Association in 1850, becoming one of its managers. He also servered on the State Assembly in Trenton beginning 1863 and ending in 1868. He passed away in 1893 at the age of 79.
