The 2.5 story fieldstone 40'X 55' mill was named for the title land plot and subsequently the community Adelphi, that sprang up from the business transacted at the mill. The mill was listed on a 1861 map of Bradensburg District #2 by Simon Martinet as Freeman's Mill and was indeed operated by the Freeman family until just prior to World War I. The old photo from the 1930's show the mill in a very neglected condition. The mill would not restored and renovated for another 20 years. Albert S. The mill ground both grain and carded wool, being built by brothers, Mahlon & Issacher Schofield in 1796. From 1920 through 1950, the mill was a part of Leander McCormick-Goodhart's Langley Park estate. The Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commission was the recipient of the mill and accompaning 34 acres of land from McCormick-Goodhart in 1950. The restored mill, with its display of milling machinery and sets of millstones was opened in 1954 as the Adelphi Mill Recreation Center-a community center. This mill is Prince George's COunty's only surviving mill. F.
