Achey Grist Mill & Sawmill
Go 2 miles west on Pa 663 from the Pa 663/Pa 309 intersection west of Quakertown. Turn left on Mill Hill Rd., go 1000 ft. and turn right onto Milford Square Pike. Go 500 ft. and turn left onto Hillcrest Rd. The mill is immediately to the right across the stone arch bridge.
The mill is 3.5 story fieldstone sructure about 35'X 50' in dimension, with catshead in the gable end away from the creek. In 1992, some or most of the rock was covered in stucco. *Update: Outside dimensions recently measured found to be 40'X 45'. Jerry Reidy 12/30/05*
A view of the side of the mill turned residence from the Unami Creek looking north. Some renovation has been done mainly in the window department.
Another view, this time from Hillcrest Rd. across the stone arch bridge to the mill. With the stone arch bridge, the mill looks very English.
The picture depicts the front of the 1786 mill and also the south exposure with the dormers.
The Unami Creek from under the north side of the Achey Mill bridge looking upstream. Very rocky with red shale, rocks and boulders.
Looking under the bridge arch toward the south, a 180 degree photo from the one above, showing the rear of the mill. The bridge was built in 1906-G.F. Moyer, C.Y. Stradling, and S.M.Fite, Commissioners; W. Cadwallader, Co. Clerk; & H. Eastburn, Co. Solicitor.
The miller's house, located on a separate parcel of property now, just up the hill to the northwest from the mill about 200 yards. The miller's house is accessable off Milford Square Pike west of Unami Creek.
A parting view of the mill. A big thank you to the lady who owns the mill, for permission to wander the grounds to take photos.
