Verse for Thought
"For in You, O Lord, I hope; You will hear, O Lord my God. For I said, 'Hear Me, lest they rejoice over me, lest, when my foot slips, they exalt themselves against me'."
({Psalm 38:15 & 16 NKJV})

This 40'X 60', 3.5 story limestone mill was built in 1800 by Jacob and Magdalena Kauffman, residents of East Hempfield Township 25 years prior. The first mill was a 32'X 50' stone grist mill built in 1790, also operated by Jacob Kauffman Sr., as he owned the property from 1761. Jacob's son took charge of the mill operation in the late 1820's/early 1830's, then in 1864, the mill was known as Ms. Anna Kauffman's Mill. She was probably Jacob's son's widow and owned it through 1875.

In 1899, A.G. Kauffman was the man in charge. In 1899, A.G. Kauffman paid the taxes; then shortly after 1900, the mill sold to Paul Flory, who operated the enterprise into 1969 or beyond. It closed in 1980 and by 1992, had been tastefully converted to offices and shops, a type of mini mall in great condition.

The mill operated an overshot wheel turned by water supplied from the Little Gonestoga Creek via a rather long 5,000' headrace, the water falling a height of 6' from the dam to the the top of the wheel. The tailrace of the flour, grist, and saw mill was only 100'. Flour production on an average day was 50 barrels.
