George Hanger purchased 253 acres here in 1832. It was on this property that his first son, Jacob built the Hanger Mill c.1860. The 1860 census lists the mill as a merchant mill.

After Jacob's death in 1877, at the age of 65, the large property was divided among his many heirs. His wife Hettie received the mill. Upon her death in 1890, Silas Huff, who who had married Jacob's daughter Obedience Robinson Hanger, purchased the mill.

J. B. Hanger had a local company, Silver Lake Welding, come and take the 10' wide by 6' high metal wheel, which was in very poor condition, and rebuild it. Although the mill has not operated since that early part of the 1900's, it and much of its original machinery were in very good condition in 2008. Notice the gearing under cover behind the extended, hanging enclosure.

Silas died in 1924 and bequeathed the property to his two unmarried daughters. In the 1920's the wooden water wheel was replaced with a metal one. One of Silas daughters, Rettie Huff, died in 1950 and the other, Hettie, died in 1965. In 1966 J. Brown Hanger, the present owner, purchased the mill. He says he is not able to trace his ancestry directly to George Hanger.

Hanger did a lot of brick and stone work around the outside of the mill and the mill race, the project taking over two years to complete, if any mill work is ever completely finished. Now Hanger needed a water source, since he had no water rights. He devised his own system. He put in a 5,000 gallon tank underground.

This tank would be filled with water from a spring, aided by a windmill installed by a company from New Holland, Pa. Using a 4.5 horsepower pump, Hanger can re-circulate 650 gallons a minute over the new wheel.

A bolter on the third floor. While most of the mill structure and machinery were still intact, Hanger had to replace some of the beams in the basement and the wood that supports the outside gears. There are parts of two different machinery systems: the mill stone machinery and the roller type machinery.

He originally built a wood workshop in the basement of the mill, but the contents of the shop were lost in a flood in 1985. J. B. Hanger has now owned the mill for over 40 years. He did a lot of work on the mill over the years. There is water, a good wheel, and a lot of good machinery inside. There is nothing more Mr. Hanger would like to see than the mill at work, especially at his prime age of 90 years young.
