Hykes Mill / Col. Jacob Bear's Mill
East of Newberrytown on Pa 382, then south on Old Trail Road for 2.5 miles, cross Ganoga Bridge and turn right on Hykes Mill Road and the mill is on the right at 100 Hykes Mill Road.
A red sandstone/fieldstone 3.5 story sructure with basement measuring about 40'X 56' in footprint. The mill is non-operating, is in fact deteriorating and is not safe to enter. Several outbuildings and additions make up the mill complex.
Animal feed is still ground and mixed in a newer mill structure across the road beside the stone miller's house. The photo below shows a closeup of the water inlet off the Conewago Creek.
*Update: AKA Bear's Mill (Bair's Mill), Conewago Roller Mill. The first mill was built c. 1788-90 by Martin Shetter. The mill was last operated in 1956 by Harry Hykes. Robert T. Kinsey 02/15/2006*
After a new feed store was built across the street beside the stone miller's house built by Col. Jacob Bear, some renovating and repair was required before the mill was turned into a seasonal haunted house for Halloween. *Update: Norman Bair, owned Bair's mill in Strinestown, York Co. PA. His son in law, Harry Hykes, took over the Strinestown mill in the mid 1940's, and it became known as Hykes Mill. The stone building still stands and is used seasonally as a haunted house. Steve Fetrow, Norman Bair's great son-in -law 02/03/2006*
