Hart's/Rushland Mill
On Pa.263(Old York Rd.), procede from County Line Rd.(SRR 09033) eastward past Pa. 132,continuing east, crossing Street Rd.(SRR 09034), turn left at next road; the turnoff for Hartsville. This is now "Old"Old York Rd. Go about 1/4 mile to the mill on the left at the end of Creek Rd.
Early 1783 Boyden Mill was 1/2 mile north of Hartsville. Josiah Hart bought the mill in 1813, and moved it closer to York Rd.(Old York Rd.) In 1861 it was purchased by John M. Darrah who completely rebuilt it. Mill is just west of the historic Mohn House that served as Washington's Hdqtrs. during part of the Battle of Germantown in the American Revolution.
The small stone mill, 32'x40' footprint, is 3 stories in height with a gable end catshead at the top of 3 doors bearly visible in either photograph because of the trees. Notice the "S" end pieces of the steel rods that run through the floors from both directions to strengthen the walls when loaded with the incredible weight of corn and grain. Also notice fancy scroll design on the dark green painted eaves and gable trim. Scroll work is also on the catshead.
