Gladstone Grist & Saw Mill
On the corner of Gladstone Drive and Mill Street off Limestone Valley Road/Ch 652, in the town of White Cottage, just south of US 22, southwest of Zanesville.
The Gladstone Grist & Saw Mill is located in White Cottage, formerly Newtonville, and the oldest portion dates from 1813. The original 30'X 40' frame mill was enlarged in the late 1860's by owners/operators William and David Gladstone.
The enlarged 30'X 60' mill, 3.5 story frame with stone foundation/basement, had an up-and -down sawmill added to the north side in 1875. The mill, which operated as a grist mill from 1813 through 1913, always ran two sets of stones and occasionally three sets.
The mill also ran as a sawmill when the demand called for lumber from 1875 through 1913, when both mills were forced to close when a great flood of that year washed away the millrace and waterwheel; repairs were deemed to costly and unfeasible, so the millstones and sawblade never turned again.
