Chrome Valley Mill / Wetherell's Mill / Kirk's Mill
This mill is located at 1522 W. Jarrettsville Rd, just outside of Jarrettsville. From the junction of Noblesville Road and Baldwin Mill Road in the center of town, go east about 2 miles to the mill on the north side of the road.
According to John McGrain, a noted Maryland mill historian, this mill was built in 1857 by Samuel Wetherill. There is a plaque in the south wall reading "Wetherill's Mill/ 1857.
There was an advertisement in the Southern Aegis for the deceased Samuel Wetherill's estate lands the presence of a "large new grain mill, 3 pair of burrs, 1 of country stones... saw mill."
J. Jenks Kirk bought the mill in 1860 and six years later sold it to the Baltimore Chrome Mining Co., of Maryland. A trustees sale in 1868 advertises "Kirk's or Wetherill's Mill ...
Samuel Sterrett purchased the mill in 1869 and after the sheriff seized the mill in 1873, it was conveyed to William H. Hughes and R. Nelson Rampley. The 1867 Haws Business Directory listed Sterett grist and saw mill at Chrome Hill, while the 1880 State Directory listed A. & L. Sterrett and also H. Sterrett as millers there.
Hughes & Rampley sold to Samuel W. Sterrett in 1919. The second Sterrett's flour sacks advertised Chrome Valley Mills, Queen of Pantry Flour, Sharon, Md.
The mill closed in 1920 and stood vacant until 1959, when the property was sold to Mr. & Mrs. James H. Campbell, who restored the upper two floors as a home. The mill was acquired by Mr. & Mrs. Robert Farmer in 1973. They continued to make improvements to the mill.
