Buckland Mill / John Love's Mill / Broad Run Mill
Located near the town of Haymarket, south of I-66 along the west side of US 15 on the south side of Broad Run. The address is 7980 Buckland Mill Road, Gainesville, Va.
The mill stands on the original tract of land known as "Broad Run Tract." It was owned by the sixth Lord Fairfax, who conveyed it to his agent, Robert (King) Carter. Carter operated a mill on this tract in the early 1770's.
Carter then conveyed it to his sons and son-in-law, who in turn sold it to Samuel Love in 1774. There is information available stating that the present mill was built by John Love, date unknown.
Other sources have the present mill being built in the late 1800's by George Calvert, using materials from a woolen mill nearby, that was dismantled. The mill was a modern mill for its time being powered by a Bell or vertical turbine, located in the basement.
At the time it ceased operations, it was powered by a diesel engine. Calvert operated the mill from about 1899 to 1919. There is still some machinery on the upper floors. The present owners, Brian Mannix & Susan Dudley (Spoom members) live in the miller's cottage and use the mill for a barn and boathouse.
