Oswald Grist Mill
Take W. Church St. from northbound Pa 873 in Slatington to Emerald. At Emerald, the route becomes Franklin St/T854. Continue west then turning south as Franklin becomes Old Mill Rd. at Custer. Continue for about 4 miles total from Slatington to the mill on the left along Old Mill Road and a branch of Trout Creek.
The present fieldstone mill structure, 35'X 70' and 3.5 stories in height, was built in 1812 by a man named Hunsicker.
There apears to have been a 15'-20' section added on the rear later that is plastered and was possibly added when the mill was rebuilt in 1912 after a fire.
The addition after the rebuilding connects with or is attached to a 2.5 story dwelling, presumably the miller's house after 1912.
The woden storage building across the Old Mill Rd. and immediately opposite the side of the mill. A Mr. Frantz sold the mill to Jacob Kuntz and later Tilghman Kuntz allowed Samuel Oswald to purchase the mill in 1870.
The mill was apparantly owned by Samuel Oswald at the time it burned in 1912, and was probably rebuilt by him. TheOswalds continued to operate the mill into the late 1950's. It was for sale in the late 1990's and is now a private residence
