Gardner, a native of Scotland, built a saw mill and then a grist mill on the west side of the Jordan River in 1850. The mill was rebuilt in 1853; then again in 1877, the present mill was was built on the site after the 1853 mill was moved to Mill Creek. Archie built his first mill at age 17, built two in Canada and about 32 other mills in Utah. He had 11 wives, 48 children, and eventually the family resulted in 270 grandchildren.

Four millstones encased in a monument to early milling in the Salt Lake Basin & to Archibald Gardner's mill in particular. The stones are two sets, the pairs opposite each other.

The miller's House, built by Archibald Gardner for one of his eleven wives. It is now a scrapbooking supplies store in the complex. About a dozen building have been moved in or created to make the comlex look as it may have looked in the late 1800's. All the buildings are either craft stores or food/restaurants.
