The first mill was a stone/frame, oil mill built before 1755 by John Binkley. Henry Binkley purchased the mill from John in 1775; then in 1822, Samuel Binkley acquired the oil mill and added chopping in 1845. In 1883 it was a fulling/carding mill, still owned by Samuel Binkley. In 1893 the old mill was purchased by Imperial Milling Co. of Duluth, Mn. and it was moved to Chicago as an exhibit for the World's Fair.
