The 3 story frame grist mill built in 1892 and destroyed by fire April 3, 2005. The 113 year old mill happened to be in the way of a nearby brush fire in which apparently embers caught on a third story deck, igniting the structure. Firefighters remarked that this was the hottest or one of the hottest fires in their experience.
The photos were taken in Sept. 23, 2004, when opportunity was given and accepted from Mr. Don Christenson to tour the mill. Many antiques and much old milling equipment were lost in the fire. A rare old 1879 corn burr, a 50 gallon ceramic flour bleaching crock, various old grain cleaners and separators, old wooden grain chutes, and other household type antiques were lost forever.
The stream, Spring Creek beside the mill and the original source of power for the mill, without the dam in place. The large stones on the right were once part of the milldam.
The former entrance for the creek waters with a fine bar screen in place inside the opening. the last photo below is the mill from a little upstream of the original dam placement. Look toward the lower right, where the above inlet/barscreen opening is located.
Don Christenson, his wife Anna, and his son purchased the mill in 1997; which had been closed since operations ceased in 1955. The owner, after the closing, was determined to tear the mill down, but a concrned interest saved it from demolition in the early 1960's. The mill had used an overshot wheel, and plans were for restoring the wheel had the fire not cut the plans short. Roof and floors were repaired or replaced as the mill was in bad shape when purchased. Mr. Christenson had much historical merchandise and commemorative items of the mill for sale in the back of the mill as well as item of the Stone County Historical Society available for purchase. All these itms were lost.
