"The earth is the Lord's, and all its fulllness, the world and all who dwell therein. For He has founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the waters."

The smaller 35'X 45' stone 2.5 story mill is at the northeast end of the Dreibelbis Covered Bridge over Maiden Creek. It was in fair condition in 1992, but in 2006, the saw mill section had fairly well deteriorated with the rest of the mill rapidly following suit. Some frame sections of the mill toward the creek were already gone in 1992.

The mill was built in 1850 on land purchased by Manassas Dreibelbis from his father, John Dreibelbis, four years earlier in 1846. The mill, located two miles south of Lenhartsville was a first a small stone mill used for crushing the small flax seeds to obtain the marketable linseed oil.

Later, in 1862, the mill was converted to use as a clover mill. Clover was grown by the local farmers and permitted to stand well past the flowering stage, well into the seed forming period of growth. Then the dried, cured clover was processed through the mill to separate the seeds from the seed heads. The clover seed was sold to farmers as planting seed for raising more clover, whether for additional seed production or for use as hay for farm livestock.

All this prosperity in the business of milling necessitated an easier way to get his product to market and also to enable the farmers to get to his mill. So, in 1869 he petitioned the Clerk of the Quarter Sessions Court for a bridge to be built over Maiden Creek on the main road from Lenhartsville to Virginville, where only a ford had existed before.

*Update: In the 1950's, we used to get our apple cider, apple butter, and tomato ketchup made at this mill. We would haul our apples and tomatoes to the mill with tractor and wagon. Kermit Afflerbach 11/30/2006*
