This mill was built in 1823 (check date stones on the mill), by Stephen Whipple, a blacksmith.

Whipple had previously gone into business with Silas Hawes to build "carpenter's squares."

When Whipple built his mill, he installed a trip hammer mill powered by a water wheel.

The datestone showing the mill built in 1823. Wm. H. Whipple was a later owner of the mill, with the ?joiners squares? still being turned out on the trip hammer by George Briggs and David Allen after Hawes quit the business in 1828.

Hawes Patented process was perfected using better equipment built by Judge J.D. George. Mr. George went on to found and become the first president of the ?Eagle Square Company? situated also in South Shaftsbury in 1864. This company began operation in new brick, stone, and frame structures on about 6 acres, and employing roughly 100 plus men.
