Verse for Thought
"But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition"

This 40'x55' fieldstone mill utilized 3.5 stories in the grinding of grist. It was active as a grain mill and flour mill during its years of operation. When photo was taken in February 1981, it looked as though the building might be converted into apartments, but as late as 1992, this had not happened and the building looked to be deteriorating rapidly.

As you look at this view, at the right corner you can see the outline of the roof of the blacksmith shop. Behind it was the dam. Ice used to be harvested from it in the winter

Water from the dam on the left of the mill, fed by Furnace Creek, flowed through a foot diameter pipe into the mill.

This was taken 6/12/2011 and shows the home across the street from the mill. It appears to be in the process of extensive renovation. The mill and home were purchased in 1922 by relatives of my family and I spent many summer weeks there. The portion to the right of the home was used as a general store/ice cream store and bar. The gristmill as a blacksmith shop.

*Update: I believe the current owner has placed the mill up for sale. Apparently the property directly across the road is owned by the same person and his desire was to sell that piece off and concentrate his renovation process on the mill itself. The township? has refused to allow the property to be split. Bruce Weiss 12/17/2005*

Since then, a picture viewed on the web showed a greatly improved condition. Hopefully this renovation or restoration will continue. The datestone under the sack hoist features the name: Daniel Udree 1823.

The Oley Furnace Mansion is on the right where General Daniel Udree resided at the time of mill construction. The furnace supplied ammunition for Washington's Continental Army.

There is very little remaining of the furnace portion of the complex.
