Dard Hunter purchased the Gomez Mill House in 1909. Hunter, well known for his artisan abilities and craftmanship, designed and built the small mill to resemble a Devonshire cottage.

Hunter resided in the Gomez Mill House from 1912 thru 1918; and during this time, he perfected his style of hand-milled paper. His seven years at the cottage mill began a life long process of creating his own style of hand-made paper using wate power and also printing on same paper.

The miller's house, built by Luis Moses Gomez, a Shepardic trader and merchant, c. 1715 as a one story stone blockhouse/fortress fur trading center. Hunter's cottage mill, a 16' x 14' structure, was operated by an overshot wheel because Hunter didn't want to deviate from using 17th century methods to produce his paper.
