The only stone gristmill in Columbia Co. was built in 1824. The Shakers may have had a smaller mill on this site prior. The Federal Census of 1850 reported that the mill was equipped with 3 run of stone. Church Family elder Jonathan Wood was its operator that year.

In 1870, two men ran the mill for the Church Family. The community replaced the water wheel with a turbine due to inadequate water flow. By 1900, its milling operations were over and the building was being used for the manufacture of patent bed springs. GPS: 73' 23.51W, 42' 26.38N

Sometime thereafter, the interior was remodeled to manufacture medical extracts, for which a boiler and vacuum pan were installed. "Mother Seigal's Syrup" and a "Shaker Extract of Roots" were among its products. Benjamin Gates was in charge of the operations at this time. J. L. Hopkins manufactured an insecticide in the old mill for several years after the Shakers left. Since 1966 the mill has been a successful country inn.
