A past deed references a 1751 survey showing an operational grist mill on the site. The mill has 2 sets of French buhr stones approximately 100 years old and a 25 diameter metal water wheel. In the past the mill building had four levels and now is three levels: first is stone & the upper two levels are wooden frame levels.

One of the past owners was Col. Fielding Lewis, George Washingtons brother-in-law, and his son, Maj. George Lewis.

The left door opened to a small office area no longer present. The right door provided passageway for entering the mill from the road.

The fresh water stream flowing to the Shenandoah was diverted toward the mill & overshot water wheel for operation via a sluice box. Then via the tailrace, flowed around an island to return to the stream just before flowing into the Shenandoah River.

These headrace stonewalls would be below the sluice box to guide water over flow around the mill building.
